Changing your allocated placement

The placement journey for students is determined in relaton to your needs, the NMC requirements, the availability of different practice experiences, and a range of other constraints. Generally the School is unable to entertain request to change placements. If, for unforeseen circumstances, you are unable to attend the placement allocated, read the attached guidance, and if you still feel it is relevant, you can request a review using the attached form. Changes can only be made in exceptional circumstances. The guidance provides details of what might (and might not) be exceptional. The form should be submitted to

The following would be considered as exceptional:

  • A commute of more than 2 hours each way (note, accommodation may be available, and SAAS can pay)
  • Having a close relative in the clinical area (as a patient or relevant staff member)
  • A recently identified disability where reasonable adjustment is required
  • When pregnancy related placement changes are required

The following are not regarded as exceptional circumstances:

  • Previous experience with the client group, particular interest (or not) in a specific client group, personal preferences, swaps
  • Concerns over public transport, travel, shift times, disruptions to shared travel arrangements
  • Routine childcare concerns, paid work commitments or constraints arising from paid employment, moving house
  • Minor illnesses/conditions (e.g. hayfever) or planned health appointments

New programme for students commencing in 2016

The University has had a variation to our programme approved for new students commencing from September 2016. We have produced a poster explaining the differences from the previous programme. Please circulate this widely.

Interested in becoming a mentor?

The School runs mentor preparation programmes twice a year for our local NHS and independent sector partners. Details are on our Mentor Preparation Programme page.

The courses involve 3 days attendance, with additional work inbetween dates. You need to be available for the three days of the programme. The dates for 2016-7 are:

8 and 15 March then 26 April 2017

9 and 16 March then 27 April 2017
